About Kalamazoo Mommy

This is a page about me.  What’s there to say about me?  Not much I can think of off the top of my head.  I’m 34 and married to a great man who is very tolerant of my knitting and spinning obsession and the money they cost on a regular basis.  I’ve also got a gorgeous 4 1/2 year old hellion child who I like to call Little Man.  The rest of the world calls him Jacob or Jake.  We live in Kalamazoo and have been back living here for almost a year after a hellish 3 year exile to the middle portion of our state, known as “Up North” to most of the lower Michigan dwellers.  Being “Up North” almost broke me mentally and emotionally and it’s taken me most of this year to get back to any sense of normalcy.  I’ve joined three different knitting groups and have made knitting friends which feels great.

In case it hasn’t sunk in, my current obsession is split in two.  It started with knitting and evolved in to fiber arts in general, especially spinning my own yarn.  I find both of these hobbies to be at the same time relaxing, medatative and supremely frustrating.  Doesn’t seem like a combination that one would strive for, but somehow it works well for me.

I’m an animal lover; we have three cats and no dogs currently, having lost one to a speeding car 2 years ago and our oldest (my first) dog, Corky, recently to a tumor in his abdomen coupled with old age.  A new dog is in the works, but not until after we get some traveling out of the way.   Our newest addition, a calico kitten who is mostly white with some pumkin and black shades on her tail, head and paws, is named Tweak and it’s such a fitting name for this wild little girl.  She’s fitting in nicely with the older cats and she’s been a real comfort to me during this time.

I’m also a total TV glutton and will happily spend hours with knitting needles or spindle and a season of a great show on DVD; most recently the second season of Numbers which I just discovered a few months ago.  I love finding a show that’s been on for awhile that you never bothered to watch, but now love.  If the video store hadn’t been out of most of season one, I’d have really exciting plans for New Year’s Eve (tonight).

That’s about it for now.  I’ll add/change things as they become necessary and/or relevant in my life.

**EDIT***

A year later:  Not much different.  We bought a house in Battle Creek, which is about 20 miles east of Kalamazoo.  I’m still knitting/spinning obsessed, but now I have a spinning wheel to go with my obsession.  Yay!  The puppy is still in the works (Easter is the plan currently) and everything is still happy and good in Dwire-land.  Oh, yeah, we’re hoping to have another baby in the coming year (or at least to get pregnant this year).

XOXO

Shannon
